DAKAR – NEWLY-CROWNED African Footballer of the Year, Mohamed Salah, is confident Egypt can win the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, which the country will host in June-July.
He was speaking in Senegal after retaining the accolade at the Aiteo Confederation of African Football Awards, capping off a memorable day for Egypt moments after they were confirmed as hosts of the tournament.
“With the support of the fans, we will aim for an eighth crown for our country (Egypt),” the Liverpool forward said.
“It would be nice to see the public come back en masse in the stadiums and thus allow a new cycle of victories.”
Salah welcomed the choice of record winners Egypt as the host of Africa’s premier football competition after Cameroon, Ill-prepared and suffering political crises, was stripped of the right to stage the 32nd edition.
“My joy is even greater with the designation of Egypt as the organizing country of the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations,” Salah said.
Meanwhile, Liverpool teammate and Senegalese forward, Sadio Mane, who finished second to Salah, noted there was some pressure to win their first title.
“With the national team, all Senegalese are expecting us to win the ultimate at the next Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. We will work to achieve that,” Mane said.
